Book Recommendation – Missing Microbes – Dr Martin Blaser
Recently I read an interesting book, “Missing Microbes” by Dr Martin Blaser.
Dr Blaser is the director of the Human Microbiome Program at NYU, and this book refers back to the discover of antibiotics, the ushering in of the ‘golden age of medicine’ and their subsequent overuse.
The book looks at how these wounder drugs have left their mark on our systems and contribute to what Dr Blaser refers to as our modern plagues:
- Some forms of Cancer
Blaser’s studies suggest that antibiotic use during early childhood poses the greatest risk to long-term health. At the same time, cesarean sections deprive babies of important contact with their mother’s microbiomes.
Missing Microbes is an excellent read, written in language that everyone could understand. I encourage you to pick up a copy and explore this fascinating topic. You can buy the book here.
