Pregnancy & Chiropractic Care
Women go through many physiological changes during pregnancy. Chiropractic care during pregnancy focuses on caring for the mother and her baby.
The nervous system affects every system of the human body. Keeping the spine aligned helps us to work more effectively, including the reproductive system. This is very important during pregnancy.
It is common for many women to experience lower back pain, nausea, heartburn, constipation, groin and public pain during pregnancy. Chiropractic care may help manage these symptoms.
During pregnancy, spinal and pelvis misalignment may occur from:
- Postural changes or adaptions
- Sleep position and pattern changes
- Eating habits and appetite alterations
- Weight gain
- Hormonal changes
- Loosening of ligaments
A chiropractor will assess the pregnant woman’s spine and pelvis for misalignment. When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby and can make it hard for the baby to move into the best birthing position.
Additionally, if the pelvis or lumbar spine is misaligned the pregnant woman may experience issues such as back pain, groin pain or sciatica.
Chiropractors are trained to work with pregnant women and utilise techniques to adapt and suit a pregnant woman’s body. Stretches and exercises that are safe to use are also recommended to compliment any chiropractic adjustments made to the spine and pelvis.
After pregnancy, it is also important for the loosened ligaments and joints to get back into better alignment. A spinal check up is recommended for both mother and baby to assist in maintaining optimal system function.
